The 20th Annual Spectrum Awards were held Saturday, November 3rd in Indianapolis by the Indiana Broadcasters Association (IBA). According to the IBA website, “The Spectrum Awards recognizes broadcast excellence for outstanding achievement in broadcasting by Indiana radio and television stations. The competition is established to encourage the highest standards of reporting, community service and production creativity”.
Broadcasters across Indiana are split into three “markets”, based on the population of the market each broadcaster serves. Terre Haute is included in the “Medium-sized Market”. This ‘market’ also includes broadcasters from Evansville, South Bend, Ft. Wayne, Muncie, and Lafayette. There are numerous categories that recognize broadcasting excellence, including “Station of the Year” in each ‘market’.
105.5 the River WWVR was recognized as Station of the Year for the “Medium-sized Market” in Indiana. The River was one of three finalists for the award, which included HI-99 WTHI, and WKDQ from Evansville. 105.5 the River has been broadcasting in the Terre Haute metro for nine years and includes the Bob & Tom show, along with a blend of Classic and modern Rock. Ed Zeppelin, WWVR Program Director, was excited to win, “It's always nice to get a little recognition, so it's quite an honor to be named station of the year by the IBA!”
Station of the Year highlights the broadcaster’s overall efforts during the year in community service, creative listener and sales promotion, quality commercial production, talk shows, news, and features. 105.5 the River is involved in community service projects throughout the year; which includes, participating in blood drives, creating an “Annual Coats for Kids” drive, participating in the Share Your Thanksgiving food drive, and raising money for Success By Six with a motorcycle ride.
